Course Description: Good theology is the foundation of good pedagogy, and sound practice flows from sound doctrine. This course will lay the theological foundation for being a good teacher, covering key doctrines like human nature, the Scriptural goals of education, the Fourth Commandment and a proper understanding of authority, the three estates, discipline, and reconciliation. Since all theology is practical, we will discuss how to build on this theological foundation, covering topics such as forming Christian culture in the home and school, creating good routines, making and upholding good rules, preparing for teaching, the act of teaching, and assessing students. Participants will engage many educational writings with emphasis on the classical period and the Christian Church, reading excerpts from Quintilian, Melanchthon, John Chrysostom, John Milton, Plutarch, George Herbert, Paul Gerhardt, and others.
