Join Rev. Brennick Christiansen for a fifteen-week course exploring the theological and philosophical foundations of classical Lutheran education. Grounded in Holy Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions, this course examines how theology—the study of God and His works—provides the proper foundation for understanding education, human nature, virtue, and the pursuit of wisdom.
Participants will explore the relationship between faith and learning, considering how God's gifts of reason, language, and the senses serve His ongoing care for creation. The course will also examine how the Church may rightly reclaim and employ insights from the classical tradition in service to the truth revealed in Christ. Through a survey of key primary texts from the Western canon, students will gain a distinctly Lutheran perspective on the principles and practices of classical education.
Topics will include the Scriptural foundations of learning, major philosophies of education, the role of the liturgy in formation, the seven liberal arts, the cultivation of virtue, and the enduring relationship between theology and the classical tradition. Weekly readings will provide the basis for thoughtful discussion and practical application within the classroom, home, congregation, and broader culture.
Rev. Brennick Christiansen serves as pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church and teacher at Messiah Lutheran Classical Academy. He and his wife are the parents of six children. Rev. Christiansen holds a Master of Arts in Classical Education from the University of Dallas and is currently pursuing doctoral studies through the University's Institute of Philosophic Studies. A passionate advocate for classical Lutheran education, he brings both pastoral insight and scholarly rigor to the study of theology, philosophy, and educational formation.
Whether you are a teacher, administrator, pastor, or homeschool educator, this course will deepen your understanding of the theological and philosophical foundations of classical Lutheran education and equip you to approach teaching and learning with greater wisdom, confidence, and faithfulness in service to Christ and His Church.
