Rev. Dr. Charles Schulz, Dr. Robert Sorensen, Dr. Brian Sundermeier and Dr Erin Real

Dr. Real, Associate Professor of Spanish, Spanish Program Leader Dr. Real leads Concordia University Chicago’s Spanish program, including the PK–12 Spanish Education Program. She teaches courses across the curriculum, including beginning Spanish, composition and conversation, literature of Spain and Latin America, Hispanic linguistics, Latin American cultures, and foreign language teaching methods for grades PK–12. Her research interests include K–16 Spanish curriculum articulation, guided autonomous language learning, and language advising. In 2024, she helped lead the Lilly Network Small Grant program, Spreading Vocation through the University – Athletic Staff, and currently serves CUC as Faculty Athletic Representative. She has been a CUC faculty member for 18 years and also serves on the Little Saints Preschool executive board in Hampshire, Illinois.

Dr. Schulz is the Classical Lutheran Educator program leader at Concordia, Chicago. He holds advanced degrees in Classics, exegesis, and early Church history and has taught in the CUS system for 25 years. His PhD (2020, CSL) is in the history of exegesis.

Dr. Sorensen is Professor Emeritus of Theology, Greek and Spanish at CUC. He also pastored for many years in the Chicago area.

Dr. Sundermeier is a professor of cognitive psychology. His research interests include studying how people use gestures in language production and the processes supporting inference making during reading comprehension.

Teaching Languages

The three language instructors of Concordia Chicago team up with the school’s professor of cognitive psychology to share some of their suggestions and insights into teaching languages. The information shared will have application both for classical languages and modern. After sharing highlights, the panel will be available for Q and A. Possible topics include identification of good resources, the value of testing, and the value of cognates. Metacognition and memory theory will also be introduced.
