Job description:

Lower School Teacher

Lutheran Classical Academy of Saint David the King at Zion Wausau, Wisconsin

The Lutheran Classical Academy of Saint David the King at Zion seeks a joyful, disciplined, and thoughtful teacher to help build a new generation of students in wisdom, stature, and grace.

Saint David’s Academy is a Lutheran classical school committed to forming children through Holy Scripture, the Lutheran confession, the Western intellectual inheritance, and a rich culture of truth, goodness, and beauty. We believe education is not merely the transmission of information, but the formation of the whole person for faithful life in the home, church, and community.

The Lower School teacher will join the Academy in its founding years and help cultivate a classroom life marked by reverence, delight, order, attention, memory, language, and love of the good.

Position Summary

The Lower School Teacher is responsible for teaching and guiding students in the Academy’s Primary or Grammar years, depending on assignment. This teacher will help establish a classroom culture of strong habits, humane learning, and Christian charity, while instructing students in the foundational arts of reading, writing, number, language, literature, history, nature study, and the life of the Church.

The ideal candidate is a teacher who understands that young children do not need shallow entertainment or premature abstraction, but rather rich language, beautiful stories, ordered knowledge, meaningful discipline, and joyful seriousness.

Responsibilities

The Lower School Teacher will:

  • Teach core academic subjects as assigned, which may include reading, phonics, grammar, composition, arithmetic, literature, history, catechesis, nature study, and introductory Latin

  • Cultivate an orderly, peaceful, and affectionate classroom rooted in Christian discipline and mutual respect

  • Lead students in the foundational habits of attention, memory, recitation, narration, handwriting, and careful speech

  • Use strong teacher-led instruction while also fostering wonder, participation, and thoughtful discussion appropriate to the age of the students

  • Teach from approved curricular materials while exercising sound pedagogical judgment in lesson planning and classroom execution

  • Present rich content in ways suited to the developmental stage of the child

  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents regarding student progress, concerns, and classroom life

  • Maintain accurate student records, grading, and reports as required by the Academy

  • Participate in faculty meetings, school events, parent evenings, and the common life of the Academy

  • Support the Academy’s mission, culture, liturgical rhythm, and confessional integrity

  • Work in a collegial and obedient spirit under the leadership of the Headmaster

Desired Qualities

We are seeking a teacher who:

  • Confesses and lives consistently with the Christian faith and is supportive of the Academy’s Lutheran identity and mission

  • Loves children and is able to combine warmth with firmness

  • Possesses a strong command of language and communicates with clarity, maturity, and beauty

  • Understands that education in the lower years should be rich in story, song, memory, imitation, and ordered practice

  • Values both wonder and discipline

  • Can teach children not only skills, but habits of mind and heart

  • Understands that the aim of lower school is not hurried sophistication, but deep foundations

  • Is able to work with a developing school culture in a flexible and constructive way

  • Sees beauty, moral formation, and intellectual seriousness as belonging together

  • Desires to help students love what is true, good, and lovely

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, liberal arts, a teachable subject area, or related field

  • Classroom teaching experience in elementary or lower school settings

  • Familiarity with classical education, Christian education, or traditional liberal arts instruction

  • Experience with or willingness to learn strong phonics instruction, language-rich teaching, and content-rich elementary pedagogy

  • Strong classroom management and lesson-planning ability

  • Ability to teach with confidence, order, and affection

  • Willingness to join as a participating member of an ELS congregation

  • Teaching licensure is preferred where applicable, though candidates with strong alignment to the Academy’s mission and demonstrated teaching ability may also be considered.
