The Greek tragedies, with their focus on ancient myth, have influenced Western culture and literature in profound ways. Yet, many people read only a handful of these plays during their school years! In this course, students will be immersed in the theater of the Greeks during the “Golden Age” of Athens (5th century BC). Through faith-based dialogue, we will apply lessons learned from the readings to our own lives. At the end of this course, students will have read all of the extant tragedies of Aeschylus and Sophocles. (Students who continue into the spring with “Part Two: Euripides” will read all of the extant Greek tragedies.)
