Teaching the Church Fathers
The Lutheran Reformation claimed and demonstrated its continuity with the historic church catholic by appealing to the Church Fathers, those foundational teachers and writers of the first six centuries of the Christian era. A Classical Lutheran education will follow this “Wittenberg instinct” by engaging with the Fathers and including them in the discussions of history, theology, and even logic and rhetoric. This presentation will introduce teachers and parents to the key Fathers, offer various schemas of categorization, and introduce key texts for consideration. Given that the Fathers don’t always “sound Lutheran,” some interpretive guidelines will also be given, so that the Fathers might be read in their own context but also in way that guides us today.
