Implementing Classical Physical Education
PE deserves the attention and reforming energy of classical schools. Modern games and sports PE is faint shadow of what PE used to be. Classical PE was incredibly sophisticated, caring about foot and wrist strength (and everything in between) and the proper way to stand, walk, run and jump. It treated young men and women differently and results were amazing. Classical American PE does have a classical pedigree, and we should champion and revive it. After leading physical education class for 7-12 grade boys based on the La Sierra High School PE program, I want to share what I have learned from the process and practical tips on how to introduce such a program, work with the time and facilities you are given, and modifications I have made. From there, I will sketch out steps that can be taken to improve PE for both boys and girls in grades K-12 and how to grow the program over time.
