Classical Education and Logic 1
Logic fits naturally within the structure of a Classical education because the three acts of the mind studied in Traditional Logic I—Simple Apprehension, Judgment, and Deductive Inference—parallel the three stages of the Trivium: Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric. In the Grammar stage, students learn foundational terms and definitions, just as Simple Apprehension focuses on grasping basic concepts. In the Dialectic stage, students analyze and ask “why,” mirroring Judgment, where propositions expressing truth or falsity are formed. Finally, the Rhetoric stage trains students to communicate persuasively, which corresponds to Deductive Inference, where students construct valid syllogisms and coherent arguments.
