Teacher Bio: I had the blessing of being home-schooled from preschool through 12th grade and am very thankful for the opportunity to have learned about God's world right at home with my family. Once it was time for college, I moved from Iowa to the snowy state of Minnesota, where I attended Bethany Lutheran College. I decided to stay up north after graduation and now really enjoy being on the "teacher" side of education. With over ten years of teaching and tutoring experience, I am now excited to work with Webworks and pass on the love of learning to another generation of home-schoolers. Latin is far from dead, and its influence can be seen in our everyday conversations; while the study of music and its intricacies leads to a greater understanding of the beauty God has created in nature. The dedication and focus required for an in-depth study of both disciplines is carried over into all other subjects and is readily applicable to life. What fascinating subjects to delve into and study in a Christ-centered learning environment!

Course Description:

Latin is one of the foundations of classical Christian education and is valuable in any learning environment. The process of language affects what we think, what we believe, how we act, and how we carry out our lives. Latin enhances all of those aspects and opens a whole new world and appreciation for words and communication. It may not be a “modern” language, but that makes it all the more valuable, since from its roots stem the contemporary romantic languages and the foundation of English. The discipline of studying Latin not only broadens the knowledge of English grammar and words, but also aids in the proficiency other languages from around the world. God chose to speak to us through His written word, and it is a privilege to expand our language comprehension and study what He has given us to use in our vocations on earth. The course grade is based on assignments, quizzes, tests, and class participation.

2011 – 2012 School Year, Webworks

Full Year Course

9th - 12th Grade students

One High School Credit (Music, Fine Arts, or Elective)

Course Description:

As Martin Luther once wrote, “Music is an endowment and a gift of God, not a gift of men.” This sixteenth century doctor placed music next to theology, giving it the highest praise. Of course, Luther is not the only notable person to greatly esteem music, but his assessment is worth noting since it points us back to the Creator, reminding us that He gives us all things. Through our vocations on earth, we reflect Christ's love by serving our neighbors – even through the gift of music.

In music fundamentals, students will be introduced to music terminology and history, learn the basics of music theory, master the fundamentals of staff reading and notation, experiment with composition, and develop an appreciation for the art of music in all its aspects. Each concept is taught in an imaginative and constructive way, and is introduced in three steps: comprehension (grammar stage), application (logic stage), and creative implementation (rhetoric stage). The course grade is based on assignments, quizzes, tests, and class participation.
