Classical Forum hosted at Our Savior Lutheran in Houston!
More than 120 educators and administrators attended the first ever
Classical Forum at Our Savior Lutheran School in Houston, Texas.
The theme was “What hath Athens to do with Jerusalem?” Attendees
gathered to listen to a variety of sessions presented by David
Hicks (“Norms and Nobility”), Andrew Kern (CiRCE Institute),
and Wes Callihan (Schola Classical Tutorials).
The Forum began with a Texas BBQ and a presentation on our theme
by David Hicks. David opened the forum with a presentation on Christ
as a classical teacher. Why do we embrace the Gospel but so often
fail to imitate his classical teaching methodology? Andrew Kern then
led a breakout session on what Plato had to say about early childhood
education. Wes led a breakout on the reasons we teach live kids dead
languages. The evening concluded with an altar to steeple tour of
Our Savior Lutheran Church unique sanctuary.
Monday morning began with David Hicks continuing his talk on our
theme. David presented a history of the early Christian schools established
by Clement and Origen. Three breakout sessions followed with Andrew
Kern presented Herodotus and his Histories, Wes Callihan presented
a session on the great books, and David Hicks led a dialogue between
Marcus Aurelius and Saint Augustine. The three final breakouts of
the forum were Andrew’s Lost Tools of Writing, Wes’s
presentation on what a classically trained 8th grader looks like,
and David talk on St. Basil’s letter to young Christians on
the use of pagan literature.
We concluded the day with a lunch and a panel discussion with all
three of our speakers. The panel included a Q&A from the audience.
As a result of numerous requests to hear the organ played, we broke
into a spontaneous singing of the battle hymn of the Reformation:
A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” Even the non-Lutheran attendees
at the conference were polite enough to stand while we sang Luther’s
great hymn and the organ thundered. It was a wonderful way to end
the conference!
ANNOUNCING THE 2008 CCLE NATIONAL CONFERENCE
The Consortium for Classical and Lutheran Education will host the
2008 National Conference on August 5-7 at Patrick Henry College
in
Purcellville, VA.
The 2008 CCLE Conference theme is "For Christ and For Liberty:
The Christian in Society." Three distinguished leaders in Classical
Education constitute the Program Committee: Dr. Steven Hein, Dr.
James Tallmon, and Dr. G.E. Veith.
More details will be available soon, but be sure to mark you calendars
now. For more information contact Bill Heine at billheine@Qwest.net
or call (307) 674-6434.
At our conference last June a number of headmasters indicated that
they have students who would benefit from a rhetoric course. Patrick
Henry College is offering its Rhetoric course, taught by our own
Professor Jim Tallmon, beginning in January 2008. Dr. Tallmon tells
us that the class is perfect for college-bound Juniors and Seniors,
or as an honors level communication course. Dr. Tallmon has placed
a number of helps for classical educators and homeschoolers on his
Rhetoric Ring, and the rhetoric course utilizes that resource extensively.
